I think this all snowballs into Paris being portrayed as a cowardly wimp, as you put it, and most later depictions have just continued to adopt these stereotypes about him. All of our stories about the war come from the Greeks, who viewed archers as cowards, easterners as effeminate, and specifically hated on Paris because he stole Helen away and kicked off the tragedy of the war.
